Families wondering how to fill the long summer holidays need look no further than East Midlands Airport for fun and interactive activities.

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is holding summer family activity sessions at its Aerozone – the on-site education facility.

The two-hour sessions are for children aged between 5 and 11 years and their parents or carers. Activities range from craft making to treasure hunts as well as having access to East Minilands – a dedicated airport role-play area where children can pretend to work at an airport. They will also have an opportunity to meet firefighters or airport police.

The family fun-days are organised by EMA’s education and outreach team who work all year round with schools to inspire young people about airports and the potential future career opportunities that airports offer.

East Minilands is a fun and interactive role play space which incorporates the key areas of the passenger experience. The space can be used by people of all ages and includes a check-in desk, security area with ‘mock’ security scanner, café, shop and plane, complete with eight aircraft seats. There are also uniforms to try on for children who enjoy dressing up.

Jo Wood, East Midlands Airport’s Education Coordinator, says: “Our family-activity days are designed to engage young children with the more fun aspects of airports. Not only will they learn fascinating facts about airports but will also have a hands-on experience of passenger procedures. For children who have never been on an aeroplane, it provides a great introduction to the airport."

Thousands of families with children of school age will travel through EMA in the next few weeks as schools break up for the summer holidays. More than 850,000 passengers are expected during July and August. Mainland Spain, the Balearics, the Canaries and Portugal continue to be the most popular destinations for EMA passengers.

EMA’s summer activity sessions take place from 10am – 12pm on:

  • Tuesday 26th July
  • Tuesday 16th August
  • Tuesday 23rd August

The cost is £4 per child and adults are free. To attend, please book on Eventbrite
