Ahead of what is expected to be the busiest year for passenger travel since 2019, East Midlands Airport (EMA) has begun one of its largest ever recruitment drives.

The airport has vacancies in key customer-facing functions including, airport security, customer services, assisted travel and car parking.

As the airport continues to build back after the pandemic, even more passengers are expected this year compared with 2022. The peak season for passenger travel is from Easter through to the October half-term holiday when two-thirds of EMA’s total number of passengers use the airport. This year’s forecasts suggest that passenger numbers won’t be far off where they were during the summer seasons prior to the pandemic.

The winter months before Easter are critical to recruiting the roles needed to ensure that customers have the smoothest experience at the airport. The current focus is on attracting applicants to the security and customer service teams. These roles require training which needs to be completed before passenger numbers start to increase. The airport will also be recruiting to its car parking teams while partner organisations that provide baggage handling and those that operate retail and food and beverage outlets will also be advertising vacancies.

Michael Grimes, East Midlands Airport’s Customer Services and Security Director, says: “This is an exciting time to join the team at EMA. There’s a real buzz around the place as we look forward to welcoming back passengers this year, many of whom still won’t have travelled overseas since before the pandemic.

“Being a smaller regional airport, we pride ourselves on the quality of our personable and friendly approach to customer service, and we aim to give everyone who uses EMA the best possible start to their holiday or trip.

“We are looking for new recruits who enjoy interacting with customers, putting a smile on people’s faces, and the energy of a 24-hour operation. Airports are exciting places to work, and I urge anyone looking for a new job this year to check us out. In return, we offer competitive pay, flexible hours to suit lifestyles and a friendly and supportive working atmosphere.”

As part of its recruitment drive, the airport is holding a jobs fair on Saturday 4 February in the check-in hall between 10am and 2pm. As well as promoting its own vacancies, airlines and providers of aviation services will also be attending including DHL, Jet2.com, Swissport, Boots, TRG, HMS Host, World Duty Free, Greggs, Travelex, DNATA and Groundlink. Free parking is available for the event and anyone wishing to attend can register at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/east-midlands-airport-jobs-fair-tickets-482432648037

Marcella M'Rabety, Head of Education, Skills and Employment, said: "With a range of vacancies on offer spanning many of the airport functions, the jobs fair is a great opportunity for people to meet us face-to-face and find out what it’s like to work here. The airport offers job seekers loads of variety, bags of opportunity and a fantastic team who will support you.”
