East Midlands Airport helps make merry memories for children heading to the North Pole

The special festive flight to the North Pole on Wednesday 3 December was organised by national charity When You Wish Upon  A Star, supported by TUI and East Midlands Airport.

From the moment they arrived at the airport in the early hours of the morning, the 50 children and their families had a day filled with fun. Forty members of airport staff were on hand to give them an extra special welcome as VIP guests, including airside crafts, performances and treats, as well as smoothing their way to get on board the aircraft. Staff from TUI and groundhandling firm Swissport also gave the guests a warm Christmas welcome and made the check-in area festive and fun.

Once in Lapland, everyone was transported to visit a winter wonderland for husky rides, sledging, snowmobiling and toasting marshmallows around a campfire while watching a spectacular firework display before heading to see Father Christmas.

East Midlands Airport’s Managing Director, Steve Griffiths, said: “This annual flight to Lapland is such a special occasion, and we have many eager volunteers among our staff who love to come in and give the children and their families a send-off that is as easy and unforgettable as possible.

“There was plenty of festive cheer and treats while they were with us, ahead of the truly amazing experiences they had in Lapland including meeting Santa. We’re always delighted to support When You Wish Upon A Star with this unforgettable treat.”

Helen Bull, TUI Cabin Manager on the flight, said: “Being part of this magical Lapland trip was a privilege for our crew. We loved watching their faces light up as we took off, and helping them make memories on an adventure they’ll treasure forever.

“Our crew put their hearts into making every moment of the flight truly special for the children and families.”
