East Midlands Airport (EMA) is gearing up for peak summer as schools across the region break up for the holidays.

Approximately 900,000 passengers are expected to fly through East Midlands Airport between now and the end of August. Monday 12 August is anticipated to be the busiest day with just over 20,000 passengers flying in and out of EMA.

While mainland Spain, the Balearics, the Canaries and Portugal continue to be the most popular destinations, the demand for Eastern Europe continues to grow. Last month, EMA saw a 40% increase in passengers flying to Turkey.

The top five destinations to fly to from EMA this year are:

  • Palma de Mallorca
  • Alicante
  • Faro
  • Malaga
  • Tenerife South

In addition to the usual favourites, this summer passengers will be enjoying new routes which include:

  • Greek Island Santorini (TUI)
  • Shannon (Ryanair) on the West coast of Ireland
  • Nantes (Ryanair)

After a gap of nearly five years, flights to Enfidha-Hammamet in Tunisia return, also with TUI. In response to the national increase in demand for travel to Eastern European resorts, Jet2.com has added Bourgas in Bulgaria to its list of routes from EMA.

Passengers can also enjoy new experiences and products as they travel through the airport this summer including a refreshed menu in Proof 65 - East Midlands Airport’s very own restaurant, and new dishes in Castle Rock. For those who love to shop, the new Jo Malone range in our Word Duty Free store will be a must, along with the latest technology from Dixons Travel.

Improvements to the airport’s physical infrastructure are underway this summer with preparatory works having begun on the expansion of the arrivals hall. Passengers landing back at EMA will see a temporary structure in place until the hall extension is complete.

Beth Brewster, East Midlands Airport’s Commercial Transformation Director, says: “This is a great time of year for us when we welcome thousands of excited passengers to the airport as they begin their longed-for summer holiday. As the region’s international gateway to mainland Europe and further afield, all top holiday destinations which guarantee sun and sea are easily reachable on flights from EMA, as well as city destinations for those considering shorter breaks.”
