New chairperson for disability forum required

Summary

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is seeking a new chairperson to lead its disability forum.

The independent role helps to shape and scrutinise the service the airport provides to people with physical and hidden disabilities. The quality of this service is continuously reviewed by the forum which includes representatives from local disability organisations in the East Midlands. The disability forum meets quarterly to discuss performance, training, facilities and best practice.

EMA is looking for a chair who has a track-record of improving access to disability services, is passionate about delivering results and is well-connected to local disability groups and charities.

For the second year running, the airport has been rated ‘Good’ by the Civil Aviation Authority for the services it provides to passengers with physical and hidden disabilities. This is thanks to investment in staff training - passengers who need assistance are looked after by the Passenger Services Team - and improvements to the physical infrastructure. The airport also offers ‘try before you fly’ days for those who are anxious about visiting an airport. These are particularly beneficial for passengers with dementia or autism and their families as it often helps put their mind at rest in advance of the day of travel.

Andy Tyler-Smith, EMA’s Customer Services and Security Director, says: “We are committed to inclusive travel for all passengers, regardless of the assistance they may need. We regularly receive very positive feedback from passengers who have benefitted from the support we provide to people with hidden or physical disabilities. We need an expert who can help us drive continuous improvement in the quality of services we offer to allow independent flight travel for thousands of passengers a year. We want to ensure that everyone’s experience of EMA is a positive one.”
